Brandon Sanderson is the last person I would have assumed would trick me with false advertising, but after only 44 pages were done of the ‘Mitosis’ copy I had. Mitosis is a novellete written by Brandon Sanderson that is part of The Reckoners series. It takes place between Steelheart and Firefight.

And I wonder if it might help to go back to the beginning, to put everything in some kind of order. You will never read one of his stories and become frustrated at a cheesy plot twist or deus ex machina solution to a problem.

A fast paced short read that acts as a perfect, if somewhat unnecessary filler between the two books. During this time, David’s father grabbed one of the dead guard’s guns and prepared himself to kill Deathpoint, believing that Steelheart was a hero.
This book is about Mitosis, who is again an Epic, and who wants some answers about how Steelheart died. Not like the city was before Calamity, but also a big change from how it was under Steelheart. David and Exel delve into the lore of ‘Dawnslight’, a believed good Epic who watches over the city and grants it with glowing lights on the spraypaint on the side of the walls of buildings, as well as filling the interiors of the city’s skyscrapers with luscious, jungle-like greenery and fruit to feed the people.
If this short story has any larger implications for the series, it is in discussing how epic weaknesses are in someway related to fear. When Calamity offered him powers he turned them down, yet these seem like strong signs that he is an epic. Something that destroyed them. Kinda like horcruxes, because if sandesron of them remains, the dude won’t die.
I joined a large group of people in a buddy read of Steelheart earlier in this month and absolutely loved it. There’s always another secret.
