Mais nos yeux exprimaient tout. To explain the pull this book maintains over me, that avernean kinship —I think to the passage that begins with, “I sought a soul that might resemble mine”.
Returning to that shop on a black, listless day, the book remained waiting me. In the tradition of Baudelaire and Rimbaud, Ducasse the author’s real name dared to go where very few creatures venture: It is an impenetrable and maldroor book. Thanks for telling us about the problem. Les Chants de Maldoror is often described as the first surrealist book. Its narrative is fractured and deranged, its polemicals bombastic and unrestrained, its protagonist-narrator is without positive attribute or any humane quality.
But beware of the monsters! Ducasse’s prose is hallucinatory, every word, every maldorog drips with opium metaphor and luciferian voc “Les Chants de Maldoror” is a book not to be reached for idly or consumed casually.
