The friendship between a preacher’s son and a black girl in Maine is tested by the prejudice of the townspeople. There were some really funny situations, and you couldn’t help but feel sympathy for and relate to Turner, seeing him go from the unfairness of his situations to the importance of the decisions in front of him.

It’s not much of a positive idea to leave impressionable young adults with. The main character is the teenage son of a minister who has a new job in this town–so this boy, Turner, his father and mother move from Boston to Maine. This book is tragic, a couple of very important characters die. He is a Professor of English at Calvin College. Whatever cover you prefer, this book is definitely well worth reading.
